Kappa Chapter Foundation

2001 - Creation

An organizing committee was formed by the Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega in early 2001, consisting of Gordon Lucht (K-0743), Matthew J. McGrath (K-1194), and Thomas W. Strong, Jr. (K-1030) The organizing committee prepared the initial drafts of the incorporating documents and selected Pantelis T. Papazekos, a local attourney, to be the legal counsel for this effort. The chapter paid the initial expense of $1200 for legal services and costs of incorporating, and the foundation's articles of incorporation were mailed on March 22, 2001, with the three members of the organizing committee as the incorporators. The articles were filed with the Department of State of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 26, 2001.
Application was made with the Internal Revenue Service, and on April 10, 2001 the foundation was assigned an Employer Identification Number.
On May 11, 2001 the incorporators held the first official meeting of the corporation in order to adopt bylaws and appoint the initial officers and trustees. The following persons were appointed as the initial officers:

  • Matthew J. McGrath (K-1194), Treasurer
The initial Board of Trustees was made up of:

  • Gordon Lucht (K-0743) (term expiring at the end of 2003)
  • DeWitt T. Latimer, IV (K-1112) (term expiring at the end of 2002)
  • Matthew J. McGrath (K-1194) (term expiring at the end of 2002)
  • Mason C. Kincaid (K-1188) (ex-officio as President of Alpha Phi Omega, Kappa Chapter)
  • Daniel J. Hannum (K-1186) (ex-officio as Treasurer of Alpha Phi Omega, Kappa Chapter)
On December 9, 2001 Alpha Phi Omega, Kappa Chapter exercised their right to elect a trustee for the foundation, electing Timothy P. Clougherty (K-0844) for a term to end in 2004.
On December 16, 2001 the trustees of the foundation elected Richard A. Martin (an alumnus of Omega Mu Chapter at Clarion University of Pennsylvania) as a trustee for the foundation with a term to end in 2004.

2002

The officers elected for 2002 were:

  • DeWitt T. Latimer, IV (K-1112), Vice-President

At the Summer meeting of the Board of Trustees Michael J. Creegan (K-1176) was appointed as Director of Development and Mason C. Kincaid (K-1188) was appointed as Director of Marketing.

In December, 2002 the Chapter elected Mason C. Kincaid (K-1188) as a trustee with a term to end in 2005. The Trustees of the foundation increased the number of Trustees by one and elected Matthew J. McGrath (K-1194) and Michael J. Creegan (K-1176) as trustees with terms to end in 2005.

2003

The officers elected for 2003 were:

Michael J. Creegan (K-1176) retained his responsibilities for Development in his new position and Mason C. Kincaid (K-1188) was reappointed as Director of Marketing.

Publications

From the beginning the Foundation took over the publication of The C-Book, starting with the 2002-2003 edition. In 2005 an additional book, Beyond Orientation, was added for the incoming freshmen. The first year was a 3-way partnership between the Foundation, The Tartan, and the Office of Orientation.

Grants

Several grants have been awarded over the years, including to the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Braddock Library, and others.
