- December 1995-Current: Consultant
(self-employed) Programming, system and database design and
implementation for small businesses and charitable organizations.
- April 2001-September 2002: Senior Software Development
Engineer, Fiserv InformEnt, Pittsburgh, PA. Duties included
designing, writing, testing and maintaining data warehousing tools (in
C and shell scripts under Solaris, HP/UX, and Windows and an Oracle
SQL database engine in an ISO 9000 environment). Other projects
included creating interactive system status reporting tools in Perl
and HTML.
- October 1998-November 2000: Systems Analyst, Education
Management Corporation, Pittsburgh, PA. Duties included
designing, writing, testing and maintaining software for student
admissions processing (in C, m4, Perl, and shell scripts under HP/UX
and an Informix SQL database engine). I assisted the UNIX system
administrators with various tasks that they were otherwise unable to
complete. I also served as one of two medical officers for the
corporate office, providing an immediate emergency medical response
team, and implementing a First Aid and CPR training program for
employees.
- August 1996-October 1998: Software Engineer II,
Innovative Systems, Inc., Greentree, PA. Duties included
designing, writing, testing, evaluating, installing and maintaining
software for data cleaning (in C under Windows and several varieties
of UNIX) and database searching (in C under Windows and DB2/MVS/CICS,
with the intent of porting to other platforms and database engines as
well), and designing and writing system-independent debugging
libraries, designing and implementing a consistent system for the
control of platform-dependent characteristics. I also led the
development of company C programming standards and perform system
administration tasks as needed on various UNIX machines. I assisted
with the training and skills development of other associates, both
formally and informally.
- June 1996-August 1996: Teacher, Community College of
Allegheny County Summer School, Whitehall, PA. Taught
Geometry Enrichment and parts of a Biology class.
- July 1994-November 1995: Computer and Technology
Coordinator / Physics Teacher / Computer Teacher, Halifax Area School
District, Halifax, PA. Duties included specification,
selection, purchasing, installation, training others in the use of,
inventory control of, and maintenance and administration of all of the
district's computers, networking equipment, servers, printers,
telephone systems, and associated facilities. I designed, and with
student assistance installed, a district-wide network linking more
than 150 computers and printers over Ethernet and Appletalk.
Additionally, I wrote software (in C, C++, Perl, and various other
scripting languages) to automate scheduling maintenance, and
administrative tasks. I also taught classes in computer programming,
computer literacy, and physics.
- Summer 1994: Programmer/Technician, Pankowski
Associates, Pittsburgh, PA. Duties included maintenance and
programming of an integrated client account database running on an
INFORMIX/SQL database engine, supporting all of the office computer
equipment, and administrating the Novell file server.
- October 1993-April 1994: Programmer, Chase Partners,
Inc., Pittsburgh, PA. Duties included designing and writing
a database program (in FoxPro) to track municipal zoning, construction
permits, and fee payments for local governments.
- May 1991-December 1992: Consultant / Programmer,
Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. Duties included providing
support for all computing facilities furnished by PSC, and writing
software (in C and Perl) to automate the process of job accounting on
the Cray C90, Thinking Machines CM-2, Thinking Machines CM-5, and the
SuperCluster parallel workstation project. Also, I re-engineered the
user account balance program into a client-server system that could be
run on any machine, rather than being forced to run interactively on
the C90.
- October 1989-May 1992: Head Andrew Consultant, Advisor, Hunt
Cluster Manager, MacAdvisor, and other student positions, Academic
Computing/Academic Computing and Instructional Technology/Academic
Computing and Media. Duties that fell outside those job titles
included migration of all files from the old User Services accounts to
project volumes, administration and setup of departmental directories,
pts groups, and news groups, and interviewing, training, and
supervision of junior employees.
Volunteer Experience:
- January 2001-Current: Founding President (2001-2003) and Chairman
of the Board of Trustees; Alpha Phi Omega, Kappa Chapter Foundation.
Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees of a public charity
created to promote community service in the Pittsburgh area and manage
the day-to-day operations of the 501(c)(3) corporation.
- 1998-Current: Venturing Division Advancement Chairman and Council
Committee Member, Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts of
America.
- 2002-2006: Treasurer, Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group.
Chief financial officer for a non-profit search and rescue group based
in Pittsburgh.
- December 2002-December 2004: Region V Director (Member of the
National Board of Directors), Alpha Phi Omega National Service
Fraternity. Directly managed a growing team of 21 volunteer staff
members across six sections in Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West
Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky. Acted as an advisor and administrator
to the 52 chapters in the area. Participated in long-range planning
and development for the fraternity as a whole.
- February 1996-March 1999: Section 62 Chairman, Alpha Phi Omega
National Service Fraternity. Managed a team of six volunteer staff
members in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Acted as an advisor and
administrator to the 12 chapters in the area.
