Newsgroups: alt.snail-mail From: edg@netcom.com (Ed Greenberg) Subject: Things to Read from "your" Postal Service Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1993 05:50:19 GMT After alt.snail-mail opened up, and these discussions started, I called over to the mail PO here in San Jose and ordered up some publications that I had seen, which will be of interest to lots of us who are into systems. Perhaps I should have limited distribution to USA, but since we're all enjoying learning about each other's countries, i didn't. Publication 221: "Addressing for Success" This small publication is an end user guide to addressing. It covers such sections as: Who cares about the way your mail looks? How to address for good barcode scanning Common problems State-Territory Abbreviations Publication 25: "Designing Business Letter Mail" This is a Must-Have for anybody tenacious enough to be reading this group for more than a week :-) Top Level Chapoters include: Introduction Basics of OCR and Barcode Reading Physical Characteristics of Automation Compatible Letter Mail ("Machinability") Addressing for Automation Postnet Barcode Facing IDentification Mark (Fim) Patterns Preparing Reply Mail for Postal Automation Appendices Publication 28: "Postal Addressing Standards" This one is over 100 pages of the right answers to just about all the trivia we've been covering. All of these should be available by calling the Mailing Standards Office at your nearest central or large-city post office, or from the National Address Information Center at 1-800-238-3150. Enjoy. -- Ed Greenberg edg@netcom.com Ham Radio: KM6CG Newsgroups: alt.snail-mail From: cogorno@netcom.com (Steve Cogorno) Subject: Re: Things to Read from "your" Postal Service Date: Sun, 5 Sep 1993 16:42:56 GMT In article edg@netcom.com (Ed Greenberg) writes: >After alt.snail-mail opened up, and these discussions started, I called >over to the mail PO here in San Jose and ordered up some publications >that I had seen, which will be of interest to lots of us who are into >systems. I would recommend the Domestic Mail Manual. If a postal employee ever gives you trouble, just tell them the page and section of the DMM that supports your situation. It works :-) -- Steve cogorno@netcom.com
