TV movies have been omitted. Night of the Living Dead (George Romero) Both versions were filmed in Pittsburgh. The remake has some CMU students as zombies. The black and white original includes a Pittsburgh legend named "Chilly" Billy Cardille. Dawn of the Dead (George Romero) Filmed in Monroeville Mall. Shop 'til you drop. Major gore. Day of the Dead (George Romero) Filmed mainly in a mine on the outskirts of Pittsburgh. Nothing of Pittsburgh you would recognize. The X-rated version has incredible gore, if you can find it. Monkeyshines (George Romero, Stephen King) Many recognizable shots of Pittsburgh, including Wean Hall, Hamerschlag Hall, Schenley Park, Mellon Institute, Pitt, Hornbostel Quad, and the Cathedral of Learning. A mediocre horror about a monkey-human mind-link. Wean is the evil lab. Two Evil Eyes Filmed on Walnut Street and on the North Side. Not very good. Silence of the Lambs Probably the best flick of the lot. Includes Soldiers and Sailors Hall and the Armstrong Tunnel. A detective tries to track down a cannibal with the help of a very intelligent psychopathic murderer. Dominick and Eugene A reasonably good movie filmed on the South Side. Flashdance Popular movie (though not as good as its soundtrack) about a dancer. Pittsburgh scenes include the Carnegie Museum and Library, an incline, and One Mellon Bank Center under construction. Creepshow (George Romero) One of the four horror stories here was filmed in Margaret Morrison Hall. The Deerhunter About local soldiers going to Vietnam. Filmed in many parts of western Pennsylvania and Ohio. Robocop The abandoned factory which serves as the gang's hideout is actually a Homestead steel mill. Slapshot Comedy about a very violent hockey team. Filmed in Johnstown, Greensburg, and Ligonier. Martin (George Romero) Vampire movie. Angels in the Outfield An old movie (40's?), not particularly good. Filmed at Forbes Field. About an orphan who parys to God to help her favorite baseball team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Includes actual footage of the Pirates playing. The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh Very bad 70's basketball movie about a team called the Pittsburgh Pisces. Shots of the Civic Arena with the dome open. Mrs. Soffel True story about a warden's wife who runs off with a prisoner. Filmed in the country jail. Stars Mel Gibson and Diane Keaton. Lady Beware About a woman who does window displays at Horne's downtown and a pervert who harrasses her. Includes transit busses chartered for the filming. Particularly bad. Gung Ho There are two movies with this title, only one of which was filmed in Pittsburgh. Lorenzo's Oil Partly filmed around CMU. Hoffa Nicholson and DeVito. The Knight Riders The Crazies Passed Away Darrow Innocent Blood Vampire movie. Bloodsucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh? Humor-horror. Comes well-recommended. The question mark is because we are not certain whether this was really filmed in Pittsburgh. The Zombies that Ate Pittsburgh By Paul Gagne. Gives info on Romero's films and Pittsburgh. Available in Hunt Library. Thanks to Ralf Brown, Mark Maimone, Sean Smith, Thomas McGinnis, Richard Lewis, Maggie Muller, Thomas Warfel, Su-Yuen Ling, Kenneth Mohnkern, Gregg Podnar, Michael McInerny, Mary Jo Dowling, Lori Iannamico, Robert Frederking, John Ockerbloom, and Felicia Ferlin for suggestions.
