A couple of weeks ago, the chapter was awarded the Golden Triangle Award by the Girl Scouts of Southwestern Pennsylvania Council. This Council Award is presented to an organization not affiliated with the Girl Scouts of the United States of America for their continuing service to the Girl Scouts of the Council. The award was given to Kappa Chapter for its continuing service to Girl Scouts of Southwestern Pennsylvania in its annual Scouting College and Interest Project (SCIP) Day in which local Cadet and Senior Girl Scouts can earn an Interest Patch (Badge) in a day's long activities every year in the Fall Semester. Accepting the Award on behalf of the chapter were Theresa Lacombe, the past SCIP day chair and Lynna Quandt the next SCIP day chair. In addition to the Golden Triangle Award, the chapter was also honored by the Boy Scouts of America. In a banquet held on May 6, the chapter received the District Award of Merit at the Fort Pitt District Recognition dinner. For those who are not familiar with the Boy Scouts of America's Recognitions, the District Award of Merit is presented to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level. This is the highest award that a Scouter can attain at the district level. Kappa chapter has for the past several years hosted a Merit Badge University (MBU) where Boy Scouts can earn two Merit Badges over two weekends, volunteered at District Camporees, Klondikes, and Pinewood Derbies, donated lots of time and energy to the improvement of the Camps in the Greater Pittsburgh Council, and have been the charter organization for Venturing Crew 776. Accepting the award on behalf of Kappa Chapter were Kevin Haughwout, President Spring 2001 and Josh Grim, Service Vice President Spring 2001. This is the first time that the District Award of Merit has been awarded to an organization in the Fort Pitt District. Alpha Phi Omega is a National Co-Ed Community Service Fraternity founded on the principles of Scouting. The chapter here at Carnegie Mellon University was founded in 1929 and has continuously served the campus and community ever since.
